All-Electric Opel Adam EV Axed

The idea of a posh all-electric city car, with decent range is truly an idea which needs more looking into. Smart have done it with the new ED, and Citroen is also pondering the idea - they showed off the DS3 Electrum, at the Paris Motor Show, earlier this year.

Opel and Vauxhall were reportedly also planning to bring out an all-electric version of their posh city car, the new Adam. However, now reports indicate that development has stopped, according to Dieter Metz, who went on to say that it was a “business decision”, as the end product would have ended up costing far too much.

The now-hypothetical Adam EV would have shared its electric powertrain with the upcoming Chevrolet Spark EV, so costs could have been at least partially split between the two cars. As usual, when canceling an electric car, officials rush to give explanations, and Opel’s head of sales and marketing, Alfred Reick, does just that.

He states: "If you look at the [EV] technology that's available on the market today, it's very expensive. You end up with a certain price of the car and consumers are not interested in it."
