According to a recent report from the Italian carmaker, the Giulietta hatchback had just about reached its 2010 targets of 40,000 units, selling about 39,800 vehicles by the end of last year. The figures only refer to the European market, as the Giulietta isn’t available on the American or Asian car markets yet.
The brand was particularly successful on the German market, where sales jumped by 113.5 percent last year. This might make Volkswagen's purchase of Alfa Romeo even more appetizing.
Despite this, 2011 could be a tough year for the company, as it needs to sell as many as 100,000 Giuliettas, according to this year's target. Apart from the MiTo it’s virtually the only fresh Alfa model, so the company will continue to struggle unless something is done to improve the lineup.
Last year, the new Alfa CEO Harald Wester said that Alfa's long-term sales target is 500,000 vehicles by 2014. That's a ‘substantial’ 400,000-unit increase over 2009 sales.
The new Alfa Romeo Giulietta was presented to the world at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, as a compact car created to appeal to customers who are looking for class-leading dynamic performance, as well as those who are looking for a distinctive style and a high level of comfort.
It is available in two trim versions (Progression and Distinctive), and also comes with two customization variants (Sport Pack and Premium Pack). The Giulietta also offers three driving modes: All weather, Normal, and Dynamic. The engine range includes two petrol and two diesel units, while all powerplants are fitted with Start/Stop to improve fuel consumption and reduce emissions.
