Over 300 UK Alfa Romeo owners gathered on Sunday February 7 at the company’s Allams’ dealer in Epsom, celebrating the brand’s centenary and setting a new Guiness World Record, as Mothorauthority reports.
The largest Alfa Romeo parade in history was organized by the dealer as 2010 marks 100 years of the company’s existence. The exact magic date is June 24, when the company will release a new model to mark the event.
A minimum number of 200 cars was required to set a new world record, but, as Alfa owners have always been very passionate about their cars, 312 cars attended the event. A special distinction was given to David Boyd, from Bathgate, West Lothian, who enjoyed his Alfa for 862 miles just to be a part of the gathering.
The Guiness rules required the group to drive without stopping from start to finish. The maximum allowed distance between two consecutive cars any any given time was not supposed to exceed a distance equivalent to two cars’ length. Each of the 312 drivers had been registered before the parade set off. The cars took a two mile drive. Guiness World Record is currently analyzing the attempt.
The Alfa Romeo brand is going through a period of changes, as last month Harald J. Wester was appointed as head of Abarth, Maserati and Alfa Romeo (he had already led the first two and was put in charge of Alfa Romeo as well). Earlier this month, Quatroruote reported that Christopher Reitz, Alfa Romeo’s design director since April 2008 and the man responsable for the Giulietta's design, had decided to leave the marque.
