The 2009 Gay Car of the Year Alfa Romeo MiTo may become a bit more heterosexual after the upcoming Geneva Motor Show set to open its doors in March. The Italian car manufacturer plans to debut an upgraded version of MiTo providing more power and featuring a sportier exterior compared to the base model. According to Autocar, the new Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA will boast a 1.8-liter turbocharged petrol engine capable of producing a maximum power of 240 bhp.

The 79th International Motor Show held at Geneva runs from 5 to 15 March 2009.

The new MiTo variant will still incorporate the electronic Q2 system, the aforementioned source added, which is already available for the entire MiTo range. However, the GTA will get through the same upgrade process as Fiat Punto Abarth, with improvements concerning both the exterior and engine performance. The new Alfa will set a new performance benchmark for the Italian brand, Autoblog wrote.

“The Mito GTA will get more lightweight materials such as carbon fibre and aluminium, in keeping with our strategy to cut weight from all our vehicles in the future,” an Alfa Romeo insider told Autocar, pointing that the upcoming MiTo will be mainly based on lightweight materials that could help the engine develop more power.

Speaking of exterior styling, the GTA is expected to bring more defined lines and a more aggressive look than the base model. The new MiTo is expected to compete with MINI John Cooper Works, despite the fact that it develops 31 bhp more power than the most powerful MINI. It is expected to be 2,000 pounds cheaper than the MINI JCW, Autoblog said.
