Alfa Romeo “Mille Miglia Spider” Design Study Looks Utterly Magnificent

Alfa Romeo has a long and storied history at the Mille Miglia. Named after the thousand-mile route from Brescia to Rome and back, the original incarnation of the MM raced for the first time in 1927 then climaxed in 1957. Two fatal crashes prompted its discontinuation, yet the legacy soldiers on.

Imagined by IAAD University student Francesca Fonio, the “Mille Miglia Spider” serves both as a tribute to Alfa Romeo’s achievements in the open-road endurance race and as a modern interpretation of a sporty speedster. It’s La Dolce Vita on wheels, and this rendering also borrows real-world design elements such as the Giulia Quadrifoglio-inspired wheels and brake calipers.

Sculpted with an eye on aerodynamics and the other on looks, the front end also happens to be an elegant affair thanks to ultra-slim LED lights that flank the shield-like grille motif. A double-bubble rear deck, no doors whatsoever, and two body-hugging seats are featured, along with a hunchback-like sloping rear end which is painted in a contrasting color from the rest of the body.

Loosely inspired by the 8C 2900B from days long gone past, the Mille Miglia Spider wouldn’t make too much sense for Alfa Romeo from a financial standpoint. The Italian automaker is currently developing two new crossovers, slotting under the Stelvio in the compact and subcompact segments.

Francesca didn’t mention a thing about the underpinnings, but based on the wheels and brakes, it’s safe to assume that we’re dealing with the Giorgio vehicle architecture. The most extreme member of the family at the time of writing is the Giulia GTAm, an ultra-limited sports sedan with a twin-turbo V6, plenty of carbon fiber, and Lexan for the side and rear window frames.

Alfa Romeo says the Gran Turismo Alleggerita is good for 100 kph (62 miles per hour) in 3.6 seconds thanks to a weight-to-power ratio of 2.82 kilos per metric horsepower, so imagine what that hardware can do in a lighter car such as the Mille Miglia Spider.
