Alfa Romeo simply isn’t the brand we used to know anymore. In recent years they seem to have gone on a downhill slope from which they simply can’t recover. It might be due to Fiat’s ownership or due to other reasons but apparently, they are now trying to make a comeback.
According to Auto Express, the company is working on a new Giulia GTA model, a sedan that will be rivaling the likes of BMW’s 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class. That’s not all though. A high-performance model is also in the works, to take on the reigning king, BMW M3.

That’s an ambitious plan, especially considering what happened to Alfa in the past, when it tried to take on the giants of Germany. What happened was they couldn’t keep up with the sales recorded by their rivals and the costs demanded by the research and development of the models couldn’t be covered by the sales. Therefore, they had to back out and drop the whole project.

Now, the same could happen with the Giulia GTA. Apparently they will be selling cars with prices starting around the €30,000 margin that will be fitted with 2-liter petrol and diesel engines and, for a bigger price, even 6-cylinder diesel and petrol engines from the Ghibli.

As for the high-performance model, it could be sporting the 3-liter bi-turbo V6 engine from the same Maserati Ghibli, making close to 500 HP. Couple that with rear-wheel drive and a lighter chassis than the one of the M3 (according to them) and you’ve got a recipe for quite an enticing model.

However, in this field, horsepower and torque are not the only relevant numbers to take into consideration. Too much power on the rear axle could even ruin a car on the track and off it. A balanced chassis and sharp steering are only two more things that you should take into consideration, out of a plethora of parameters. Either way, more competition means better cars for all of us.
