Italian tuning outfit Romeo Ferraris Srl unveiled the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR. Essentially the touring car version of Alfa Romeo's only compact hatchback, the Giulietta TCR will race next year in the TCR Series.
The plan was to be on the grid in Macau for the 2015 International TCR Series finale, but the Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR wasn't ready in time. Mario Ferraris, the company's CEO, declared that "it has been painstaking work because we had in mind the target of running the Giulietta before the end of the season. Finally, the first car was completed and the engine tested on the bench with promising results."
To be driven by ex-WTCC Alfa Romeo driver Salvatore Tavano and Campionato Italiano Turismo Endurance regular Mario Ferraris, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR is an awesome piece of machinery. Only 10 units will ever be produced, retailing at €98,000 a piece.
The engine uses the same 1.75-liter (1,742 cc) turbocharged TBi block found in the Quadrifoglio Verde hot hatchback, but engineers modified it to TCR International Series standards. The 4,351 mm long and 1,950 mm wide Giulietta TCR is front-wheel drive, just like its road-going brother, yet it employs a limited-slip diff and the 6-speed manual has been replaced. In its place comes a 6-speed Sadev sequential transmission, which can handle up to 500 Nm of torque. That figure is equivalent to 678 lb-ft in the American system of units.
While engineers opted for a McPherson setup for the front axle, the rear is handled by a race-grade multi-link setup. The last important detail that makes the Giulietta TCR more hardcore than the street-legal QV is represented by the stopping power. At the front, you'll find 6-piston brake calipers and 378 mm discs. For the rear wheels, Romeo Ferraris decided that 4-piston calipers and 290 mm discs were the best solution.
