Alfa Romeo was supposedly developing a bigger brother of the Giulia, which was expected to launch by 2018.
As we move closer to 2017, the year when the modern successor of the Alfa Romeo 166 should come to market, the Italian automaker hasn't tested any prototypes of the BMW 5 Series competitor on public roads. If they have, our spy photographers have not spotted them, which would be a performance in itself.

The new model would have been a competitor of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, Lexus GS, and BMW 5 Series. Just like the Giulia, Alfa Romeo’s big sedan would have employed the Giorgio platform. If you are unfamiliar with the name, Giorgio is the designation chosen by Alfa Romeo for its all-new rear-wheel-drive platform.

Previous statements of Alfa Romeo representatives have revealed that the platform supports electrification, which means that they could build anything from a mild hybrid to a fully electric vehicle in this configuration. While the latter is not expected to happen too soon, the former might be one of the directions that Alfa Romeo could follow for its next creations.

Currently, Alfa Romeo is focusing on the launch of its first ever SUV, the Stelvio. After that is done, the Italian brand still has ample work to do, as it must revive its sales as soon as possible.

The Milanese automaker has seen its share of resurrections, and the most recent of them is making us wonder what would it take to save Alfa Romeo from suffering Lancia’s fate.

The A6 and 5 Series rival might not be the best option for Alfa, as the segment is pretty much split between the German trifecta of premium automakers, with a few interruptions from Japan and even Sweden.

Instead, the Italian automaker could bring a mysterious model on the market to revive its sales on top of the Stelvio SUV and Giulia sedan. We do not have much to work with regarding the next model from Alfa Romeo, but we should learn more about it next year, when the 4C is supposedly getting the hatchet.
