Alfa Romeo Giulia "Base" Official Photos Leaked, Looks like a 166 Successor

The base version of the Alfa Romeo Giulia will debut tomorrow morning at the Geneva Motor Show. However, we already have the first official photos of the car, including one shot of the interior that's worth getting excited over.

At first glance, the Giulia looks like it copies the design language of the BMW 5 Series. However, that's not true at all. Only by reminding ourselves of the distinctive 166 model that went out of production in 2007 can we appreciate the heritage. More specifically, the Giulia imitates the facelift introduced in 2003, which brought about the parrot-nose grille all modern Alfas are known for.

Just like Jaguar XF, the Giulia sedan seems restrained and faceless, almost like it wants to be German. The colors are discreet, and the dual exhaust system sits flush with the bumper. But the designers were allowed to cut loose inside the car.

Thanks to our friends at Alfa 949, we have a photo of the cabin that they say belongs to a Giulia 2.2 JTDm. Never has a 4-cylinder diesel engine been started using a button mounted on the steering wheel, like on a Porsche 918 and the new 911 models.

But that's not all. We also see Audi-like toggles on the wheel, a really short shifter for the manual gearbox, aluminum pedals, and sexy sculptural dashboard lines. The typical Giulia range will be made up exclusively of 2.2-liter diesels and 2.0-liter gasoline units, all of them turbocharged. Thanks to a leaked internal document dating back to November 2015, we know the precise output numbers we'll get tomorrow:

* 2.2 JTDM turbo diesel with 150 PS (110 kW), 6-speed manual, RWD
* 2.2 JTDM turbo diesel with 150 PS (110 kW), 8-speed automatic, RWD
* 2.2 JTDM turbo diesel with 180 PS (133 kW), 6-speed manual, RWD
* 2.2 JTDM turbo diesel with 180 PS (133 kW), 8-speed automatic, RWD
* 2.2 JTDM turbo diesel with 210 PS (154 kW), 8-speed automatic, AWD

* 2.0 GME T4 (Global Medium Engine family) turbo petrol, 200 PS (147 kW), 8-speed automatic, RWD
* 2.0 GME T4 (Global Medium Engine family) turbo petrol, 250 PS (184 kW), 8-speed automatic, AWD
* 2.0 GME T4 (Global Medium Engine family) turbo petrol, 280 PS (206 kW), 8-speed automatic, RWD
* 2.0 GME T4 (Global Medium Engine family) turbo petrol, 280 PS (206 kW), 8-speed automatic, AWD

That's not bad. A 3.0-liter twin-turbo diesel has also been rumored and could arrive later this year with 340 horsepower. However, the ace up Alfa's sleeve remains the QV performance model, which will offer a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 making 510 PS.
