Alfa Romeo has not been a happy place the past 10 or so years. Using FWD platforms, they’ve tried to take on the industry’s finest using oversized and underpowered engines. Styling was their saving grace and so the Italians switched to style-focused small hatches. That didn’t really work either.
So you can now understand why Alfa Romeo is making so much noise about the 4C, their supposed Porsche Cayman alternative. Word is that this little sportscar is not a superior model to the German rivals, especially not in the handling department. While that’s a big problem that needs to be sorted through an update, there is one segment where imperfections are more easily tolerated.
We really wonder then why Alfa Romeo hasn’t put a spider version of the car into production. After all, sales of Ferrari 458 versions have been though the roof. I suppose one of the reasons is the 4C was not designed to be a mass-market and thus profitable car, but even as a marketing took the benefits of the 4C Spider are quite obvious.
