Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale Continuation Replica Heading to Auction

Few cars in the history of the internal combustion engine have fascinated people as much as the Alfa Romeo 33 did and still does. No, the 33 from the ‘80s doesn’t count. I am referring to the racing prototypes and the eighteen examples of the road-going Tipo 33 Stradale. This isn’t one of those cars, but only just.

According to Coys, this is a continuation replica that was purchased by the vendor in the early 2000s. The body was constructed by hand by craftsmen to the exact standards of the real deal. Believe it or not, the chassis consists of the front and rear sections of Tipo 33 Stradale #2, the second of eighteen original Stradale models ever made by Alfa Romeo. Some bits and bobs of the suspension were sourced from Autodelta, the Italian automaker’s racing division.

Under the hood, you’ll find the crankcase, cylinder heads, and six-speed manual from an original Tipo 33 Stradale. Pistons and a bore-out version of the V8 from the Alfa Romeo Montreal are also available.

Yes, it’s a nonrunner, but you should not be worried about that. Instead, rejoice because the V8 engine in the Montreal is derived from the 2.0-liter V8 of the 33 Stradale and it has a 7,000 rpm redline. The real mill can rev all the way up to 10,000 rpm, though.

The Coys auction house doesn’t offer an estimate for the continuation replica but bear in mind that the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale was the most expensive production car in the world when it was launched in 1967. How expensive, you’re asking? That'll be 9,750,000 Italian lire. To put the sum into perspective, the Lamborghini Miura P400 was 7,700,000 lire.

In all likelihood, this extremely faithful continuation replica will sell for lots of money, probably over a million. After all, the market value of an original Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale stands at "well over $10 million."
