The 47-year old BMW works driver is a story of a true survivor and passion, overcoming terrible odds just so that he can do what he loves and what he lives for.

In 2001, the back-then double ChampCar champion and former Formula 1 driver lost both his legs in a terrible accident, on the track. Most people claimed that he would never awake, not to mention race again. However, all those people were wrong.

Not even two years had passed when Alessandro came back to his one true love: motorsport. With a specially modified BMW he won no less than four races in the FIA World Touring Car Championship with ROAL Motorsport, the same team that backs him up this year in the Blancpain Sprint Series.

Between 2005 and 2009, the championship saw Zanardi behind the wheel of a BMW for more than 100 races. Leaving this sport behind, Alex wanted to try out something new and, in 2012 at London, he managed to win two gold medals and one silver, in a performance that stunned the world over.

Proving a point both on and off the track, this year, the Italian made a comeback to motorsport, joining forces with team ROAL Motorsport to challenge the title in the Blancpain Sprint Series with a modified BMW Z4 GT3.

“We are delighted to welcome Alessandro as a brand ambassador into our BMW family. For his fans all around the globe he is far more than a superb racing driver. With his fighting spirit and his positive attitude, Alessandro is a true role-model,” commented Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Sales and Marketing BMW.

“I am very proud to become a BMW Brand Ambassador”, said Zanardi. “BMW is like a second family, and over the past years we not only enjoyed great times together at the track, but we have also become close friends.”

“To return to racing as a BMW works driver this season is already great – and the fact that I will now represent this iconic company as an ambassador is just fantastic. The trust the BMW family puts in me means a lot to me. I am very much looking forward to representing this fantastic BMW brand all over the world from now on,” he added.

So, what does being a BMW Brand Ambassador actually mean? It means that Zanardi will be representing the company at various events, world-wide while also being invited to internal events with employees and the management team.

However, until we get to see him representing BMW in a formal event, we’ll get to see him driving for them in the Blancpain Series at Brands Hatch, this weekend.
