Alberto Contador Keeps Quiet about Alonso's Team Rumors

2007 Tour de France winner Alberto Contador and Fernando Alonso's manager Luis Garcia Abad need to have a drink and put their stories together, as the two don't seem to agree on the latest reports suggesting 2-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso is planning to set a professional cycling team in 2010.

The Spaniard (the cyclist, that is) is currently focusing on clinching his second Tour de France title in career, as he's rivaling Astana teammate and 7-time winner of Le Tour Lance Armstrong for the yellow jersey at Champs-Élysées. Asked about these recent allegations, Contador did neither confirm, nor denied the news (which is usually a confirmation sign).

For the moment I am concentrated on this race that goes for two more weeks and under contract with Astana. For the future, we will see,” Contador was quoted as saying to French newspaper Sud-Ouest.

The reports about Alonso's plans to set up a professional cycling team, due to be financially backed by his long-time Formula One sponsor Grupo Santander, appeared in both the Italian (Gazzetta dello Sport) and Spanish (Marca) media. However, Abad made it very clear that none of it are based on true facts.

No. There is nothing in planning or ongoing. Nothing at all,” said Abad earlier today.

Alonso is likely to again join forces with Grupo Santander in 2010, when the Spaniard is rumored to make his debut with Ferrari in Formula One. The Spanish banking firm has come very close to securing a long-time sponsorship deal with the Scuderia from next year onwards.
