AJ Foyt IV Returns to Race for Grandfather in Texas

AJ Foyt IV will compete for his grandfather's team in Texas this weekend, following the announcement made by the AJ Foyt Racing outfit that it had parted ways with Canadian driver Paul Tracy. The former CART champion replaced injured driver Vitor Meira at The Milwaukee Mile last weekend but finished 6 laps down to winner Scott Dixon, causing the unavoidable split.

However, it was not Tracy's poor run in Milwaukee that determined Foyt to give up his services, but the under-performing car he was given to run with. As revealed by Tracy the other day, the team owner admitted to him that he was embarrassed with the package provided to the Canadian over the Milwaukee weekend and promised he would continue their collaboration once he turned it into a race-winning machinery.

As it turns out, the car is good enough for grandson Anthony, who'll return to his family's team after more than 2 years. AJ spent his first 3 years of his Indy Car career at his grandfather's team, before switching to Vision Racing at the end of 2006. Having remained seat-less for the 2009 campaign, he will now do an one-off for Foyt at Texas, before figuring out his future steps this year.

Anthony has always run well at this track. He hasn't had the results but most of that was because of things that he couldn't help – tires going flat or problems on pit stops. He likes the track which is good because a lot of drivers don't care for it. Plus we've worked with him so we know what he likes, and he knows what he wants from these cars,” said Foyt Sr.

Neither AJ nor his grandfather announced any further details about a potential long-term collaboration this year. The team are expected to replace Meira for probably the entire 2009 campaign – until the season opener at Homestead-Miami at least – as the Brazilian driver will reportedly have to recuperate from his Indy 500 crash until the end of September.
