The Japanese will do just about anything to stand out. Often, that includes things that don't make sense or destroy the value of a car. Such is the case with the widebody kit for the 2016 Mazda MX-5 made by Aimgain, which we hate and love at the same time.
Firstly, we know just by looking at this car that it doesn't handle like it's supposed to. It just looks like a fat rider sat on the horse and buckled his legs, if you know what I mean.
But it's cool, in the same way a girl with a firm rump from the gym is cool, or in the way a Cadillac racing car is cool.
Aimgain has made the first Rocket Bunny-style kit for the new Miata. As all packages before it, it focuses on widening the hips of the coupe using bolt-ons. No, really, they bolted new wings onto the old ones.
Some people say the MX-5 looks like an F-Type, but this one doesn't; it's 100% Japanese. The aero package starts off strong at the front with a black chin spoiler fitted with adjustment struts, like a race car. Next up, we see inserts for the bumper and fenders, followed by side skirts that want to make a statement. Of course, they couldn't resist adding a gigantic trunk spoiler and a black diffuser. The exhaust system has been moved from the side to the middle of the car for added visual appeal.
Rocket Bunny kits started out as drift car accessories to cover the fenders of Silvias that had been equipped with wide tires. This red Miata has deep-dish black alloys with candy apple spokes and Goodyear Eagle tires.
We don't have any technical details about the car, but considering that all Japanese MX-5 models come with the small 1.5-liter engine, we could be looking at a 131 horsepower machine.
