Ahmadinejad Sells His Peugeot for $2.5 Million

In the light of the unrest that is sweeping throughout the region these days, Iran's owner, if we can call him that, has made sure that he has enough money to make an elegant getaway should the need arise.

The Iranian iron-fist ruler, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, placed a while ago a 1977 Peugeot 504 in the auction circuit, announcing that he is selling it to fund the build of 60,000 homes for the disabled and to women who are providing for their families.

According to MSNBC, the car was so successful among those with a passion for other people's belongings that the vehicle managed to snatch $2.5 million. Who bought it remains a mystery (the only thing that is known is that he is an Iranian), but according to the ISNA news agency, citing the website on which the auction was held, the interest in the car was global. After Iran, organizers say, most visitors of the website were from America.

A closer look at the model sold this week reveals that by no means the vehicle is worth that much. Apart from the fact that Ahmadinejad's presidential behind sat in it a few times, the model comes with no upgrades, no fine tuning, no nothing.

Confronted by riots all around, Ahmadinejad is trying to keep those planning similar revolts at bay, by posing in a president close to the people, far from rich and, above all, generous. During the 2009 elections, his financial statement revealed he only owns a 155 square meters apartment in Teheran and the Peugeot 504 he just sold.
