If you're new to dual-sport riding and have just spent a lot on your new bike, your budget for a new helmet dedicated to on-off riding may be a little tight. Thankfully, you can make neat choices even though you can't afford the latest high-tech lids, and the new 2017 FX-41DS Eiger AFX helmet is one of them.
The FX-41 lids have been around for a while and there are numerous riders who have been happy with them. Offering quite a lot of bang for the buck, these helmets are some of the best all-in-one solutions until you can come up with $500 or more and go for the premium gear.

Dubbed a 2017 model, the new AFX FX-41DS Eiger comes with eye-candy looks inspired from the "multi" versions. The Eiger color scheme mixes matte black and pearl white with grey-textured panels, and aggressive orange details. The interior is also a grey-orange mixture. A coat of clear varnish protects the paint, and the lid is available with a deluxe carrying bag.

The FX-41 lids come with DOT FMVSS-218 and ECE 22.05 safety certifications, making them legally usable on both shores of the Atlantic. Being dual-sport helmets, these units tip the scales at 1.68 kg (3.7 lb) for the L size, with the weight varying a little according to the size chosen.

The outer shell is made from poly-alloy and has no less than 17 venting ports with chin, side, forehead top and rear vents, while the comfort liner is made with hypoallergenic and antimicrobial nylon, with all the panels being removable and washable. AFX states that the ear areas also have ample space for installing most speaker systems.

An ample, quick-release, flip-up single turn screw face shield provides a large field of vision for enhanced safety both on and off the road. The curved shield is optically correct and is scratch-resistant and blocks UV radiation.

No mention about anti-fogging treatment was made, so we'll assume it lacks this feature. Also, it is not Pinlock-compatible, therefore rides in colder weather might need a different helmet or the face shield removed and stowed away, replaced by goggles.

Sixteen color variations plus the Eiger are available, one of which is hi-viz neon yellow. No price was mentioned for the AFX 2017 FX-41DS Eiger, but we know it will also be offered in sizes XS through XXL. Considering that the previous versions retail for around $165 stateside, the Eiger can't be much more, and thus retain its highly-affordable character.

After the jump is a short walkaround video of the new lid.
