It appears some people enjoy adventure more than they enjoy life itself. Maybe this isn’t exactly the best video to illustrate this idea (nobody’s hanging with one hand from construction cranes just for the sake of it, after all), but you still have to admire these guys for their courage.
The world is full of dangerous roads, but most of us imagine that the really bad strip filled with potholes we have to cross on our way home each day is as bad as it gets. Uhm, no. There are roads in this world that take more lives each year than the great white sharks and the African lions combined.
We don’t have any statistics for this particular route through the Annapurna mountain range in Nepal, but by the looks of it, you shouldn’t be surprised if it comes with a grim history. There’s danger lurking everywhere and, should anything happen, you’re pretty much on your own.
These guys chose to navigate the mountain-carved road on a pair of motorcycles, which instantly boosts the risk factor ten-fold. What’s more, they don’t even have your regular BMW off-road adventure bikes, but instead they’re riding on some low-key all-purpose motorcycles. Come to think of it, what you really need in these parts is something as basic as possible that never breaks down. And if it does break down, it’s simple enough that you can repair it on the spot.
At first, it may seem odd how the guy recording the trip drives on the outside, even though he can’t see what’s coming around the corner. But then you realize that the chances of them coming across another vehicle are basically non-existent. He actually says that they’ve only seen two vehicles since they started riding on that road, and that happened the previous day.
Come to think of it, choosing a motorcycle actually makes sense. Look at how narrow the road is: if two cars coming from opposite directions were to meet here, we’d have an irremediable roadblock. They'd have a nice view to admire, though.
