AeroVironment to Build Private EV Charging Ecosystem

Electric vehicle charging solutions provider AeroVironment managed to land an important contract in light of the battle ahead with rivals like Coulomb or ECOtality. The company will be building what it calls the privately funded EV charging ecosystem.

To be created in Houston, the so called ecosystem will comprise charging systems, installation services, energy usage monitoring and payment and subscription solutions or, in other words, the complete infrastructure and services needed by EVs.

The network will be built by AeroVironment for NRG Energy, who will supply the money needed for the project. In all, $10 million will be spent for the ecosystem, as well as for the installation of 50 high-powered fast charging stations by mid-2011.

“This innovative charging ecosystem will make it easier for Houstonians to drive electric vehicles and contribute to a cleaner, more energy independent future for America,” said Tim Conver, AeroVironment CEO.

“We are proud to work with NRG and its partners to introduce a comprehensive EV charging solution to Houston, and look forward to bringing this driver-focused model to other cities in Texas and beyond.”

The two new partners will be providing several charging solutions for Houston EV owners. There will be Level 2 home and commercial charging systems, High Power DC stations, installation services and network services.

“AeroVironment is playing a central role in creating this network and with it, bringing the benefits of electric vehicles to Houston,”
said David Crane, NRG Energy CEO. “AV’s demonstrated track record in EV charging solutions will help ensure this all-important first launch is successful.”
