Adventure-Ready Pickup Truck: AEV Ram Prospector XL

American Expedition Vehicles is a company autoevolution loves, chiefly because AEV is specialized in making Ram pickup trucks even more off-road capable than they are from the get-go. This time around, our attention has been caught by the AEV Ram Prospector XL package, massive 40-inch tires included.

The Wixom, MI-based shop dubs the Prospector XL its “most adventure-ready vehicle platform to date,” and that’s no overstatement. What started life as a four-wheel-drive Ram heavy-duty truck has been enhanced with a plethora of goodies extending beyond the Toyo Open Country M/T rubber.

Priced from $17,354 in fully equipped format and complete with 3 years or 60,000 miles of warranty, the AEV Ram Prospector XL is gifted with huge fender flares. These are mandatory because the 40-inch tires are very, very massive. American Expedition Vehicles also upped the ante in the ground clearance department, opting for a conservative 3-inch suspension lift kit.

The suspension also makes use of heavy-duty dampers from Bilstein for a comfortable ride on the beaten path. Baptized DualSport, the aftermarket suspension also includes a different steering geometry, all in the name of improved handling. Speaking of handling, the steering system has been beefed up with hydraulic assistance to make the driver’s job even easier.

On the aesthetic front, the stamped-steel front bumper is just what the doctor ordered, while the tow loops are rated to OE specifications. An aggressive-looking hood is also on the Prospector XL menu. AEV calls it Heat Reduction Hood and, for what it’s worth, it’s exactly what the label reads.

On the optional extras front, highlights include a water-defying snorkel, differential covers, extremely powerful LED light bars, and winches as capable as 16,500 pounds (7,485 kilograms). Pretty hardcore stuff, no doubt about it.

"Designed for the overland adventure travelers and recreational explorers who require a full-size truck that is extremely capable off-road," all of the components included in the AEV Ram Prospector XL package have been "meticulously designed and engineered to work in harmony with each other."
