1.6 million cars crash each year, accidents that cause a half-million injuries and take 6,000 lives annually, the U.S. Department of Transportation statistics show. In a trial to overcome this problem, Nissan has unveiled their “Red Thumb Reminder” campaign, a program created to raise awareness over how dangerous texting while driving really is.
Since Nissan just partnered up with Adam Levine, the Voice judge is starring in the new campaign. Maroon 5’s lead singer has declared the following 24 hours as the “Red Thumb Day”, on December 15, during “The Voice” broadcast, urging drivers to put their phones down when behind the wheel, not just on that day, but every day.

The statistics are alarming. According to the University of Michigan Tranpsortation Research Institute, a quarter of teens respond to a text message once or more every time they drive. Twenty percent of teens and 10 percent of parents admit that they have extended, multi-message text conversations while driving,” said Jeremy Tucker, vice president of the marketing department at Nissan North America.

The red thumb is a symbol and Nissan believes every time a person will see it the risk of driving while texting will stand out. The Korean auto maker is encouraging drivers to join their campaign by sharing photos tagged #RedThumb via their favorite social media channels.

For those interested in having their thumbs go red for a good cause they will be able to find the reminder bands at local Nissan dealerships starting today. The Red Thumb bands will also be distributed to the in-studio audience at “The Voice”.

Since we have been writing about texting while driving before, we can't but salute Nissan's campaign.
