Acura Teases the Precision Concept Ahead of NAIAS Release, Says It’s a Performance Luxury Sedan

Besides Christmas and New Year's Eve, there’s another important event coming up shortly. Yup, we’re talking about the 2016 North American International Auto Show, which will open its gates in Detroit next month.

With all the competition from Los Angeles, NAIAS remains the main automotive event on the North American continent, and it’s the first opportunity for all manufacturers to present their new year resolutions. However, for 2016 several important European names (like Jaguar, Bentley or MINI) have announced that they’ll be skipping this edition because of cost cuts, focusing on other events that are more relevant for their brands.

Acura, though, will be present. Not only that, but it will be bringing a mysterious concept that could mark a new direction for the Japanese brand, or at least a new era in the company’s presence in the performance sedan segment.

We said “Japanese brand,” but the Acura Precision Concept was actually cooked up at the Acura Design Studio in California. According to the short press release, we should regard the sedan with the utmost importance as it marks the new direction in design for future Acura performance-luxury sedans.

This seems to be the new holy grail of the automotive industry, with all brands coming up with three-bodied cars that can also go fast. Besides the classic German models, there's Alfa Romeo with Giulia Quadrifoglio and the all-American Cadillacs that are enjoying a lot of attention lately.

Acura seems intent on joining the party, even though the “luxury” part of its description suggests it would mostly target the German and British offerings. In terms of design, however, maybe it’s the colour, but we see a lot of Mazda’s new lines, especially over the rear wheels and maybe a little at the rear.

Or maybe it’s just that all red poorly lit teasers look the same, so we should hold our judgement until the model is released. That would be January 12, 2016, so mark that date on your calendar.

Speaking about the concept, Dave Marek, global creative director for the Acura brand said, "The Acura Precision Concept will signal the stronger and sharper focus of Acura styling on our core DNA we call 'precision crafted performance’. It is our intention to more strongly express performance through design and the Acura Precision Concept will serve as the inspiration for the styling and proportion of the next-generation of Acura vehicles, especially for our sedans."
