A race-version of the Acura NSX is without a doubt the wet dream of every petrolhead, not to mention the brand's fans. But don't get too excited, because we could see such a model in at least two years from now.
According to a report by sportscar365.com, Acura is currently working on a race plan for the new NSX. Also, a decision is about to be made in the coming weeks.

The same publication adds that Acura officials have to make a decision that implies choosing between the GT3 or GTE platform for the car, which is targeted to launch for the 2017 season.

"We’re looking at our options, and one of them is to go two-wheel drive. It’s just how big of a tear up is it? You could disconnect your front-wheel drive but is that really going to make a good race car? That’s the question we’re looking at right now. We need it to be competitive because otherwise, why be there?” said Honda Performance Development Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Steve Eriksen, cited by the source.

Regardless of what official playground Acura opts for, the race car will not be using the street version's hybrid setup.

So far, the new Acura NSX's contact with the motorsport scene has been rather shy, although the hybrid sportscar was selected as this year's Pikes Peak official pace car.

In fact, Acura installed 24 cameras along the course to capture the NSX's historic run as the official pace car with a 360-degree series of images of the new sportscar, and the result can be seen in the video here.

Although we're happy to hear the Acura NSX is given a chance to perform on the track, we'll approach the news with moderate excitement until more official info comes out.
