Acropolis Rally to Feature Night Stage in 2011

The 2011 edition of the World Rally Championship promises to be a thrilling one not only due to the change in technical regulations or the return of historic rallying names such as MINI, but also thanks to some show-boosting modifications made by a few rally organizers out there.

After the organizers of Rally Mexico have confirmed last month the inclusion of an underground stage for the 2011 edition of the event – a first in the history of the sport – this week we find out that WRC will return to the concept of night rallying for one more round in 2011. And it's all thanks to the Greek officials, who have included a night stage for the event that will kick off on June 16, in Loutraki.

Having watched the 2010 WRC on TV due to the calendar rotation policy implemented by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) recently, Greece decided to make a big return in 2011 with the addition of a brand new 20.97-km Nea Politia test. The stage will kick off at 21:33 local time, on Saturday night.

Several other changes were made to the Acropolis Rally itinerary, including the addition of a bunch of stages north-west of the Athens capital: Elatia (39.10 km, counting for SS2), Eleftherohori (18.10 km, counting for SS3) and Rengini (11.88 km, counting for SS4) stages, all of which have missed out on the event since 2005.

Additionally, Day 3 of the rally, on Sunday, will feature a two-time running of the 11.37-km New Pissia stage. The second running will actually represent the rally's power stage and will be ran live on local television. The stage's finish line will also mark the end of the event, on June 19th. In 2011, Rally Greece will account for the 7th rounds of the calendar.
