In this month’s Auto Bild Magazine, the Germans put the AC Schnitzer 116i model to the test, to check out exactly what the Aachen-based tuner is offering for nearly EUR12,000 (USD16,200).
That amount of money, however, means you get the complete package that includes the engine performance upgrade, suspension, wheelset, accessories and interior bits and pieces. For some, the engine and suspension upgrades would be enough.

After installing the new software on the 116i, the 1.6-liter engine will be making 204 HP and 290 Nm (210 lb-ft) of torque instead of 136 HP and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque, albeit using the same 6-speed manual gearbox.

Those extra ponies will be felt throughout the driving experience, keeping you on your toes all the time. Without the suspension upgrade you’d be in a lot of trouble, but the ACS guys sorted that out.

The ride isn’t uncomfortable, offering you a decent ride even over bumpy roads, whilst the agility is improved with a lower center of gravity.

Bottom line, the Schnitzer version is worth the money, making an entry-level model stand out becoming a car that turns heads around while driving down the street. The best thing about it is that you get to pick exactly what you want on your 1er, depending on how much money you’re willing to spend. Full test and prices available in the attached pdf.
