Abu Dhabi and Interlagos Track Changes Announced

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this season will feature a revised track, following intense criticism from the F1 world after last year's race. The move was confirmed by the circuit's chief executive Richard Cregan, although the exact changes were not revealed to the media just yet.

According to Cregan, changes to the Yas Marina circuit will be operated between Turns 6 and 9 in order to spice up the racing and create more overtaking opportunities. After last year's race, when the F1 finale featured probably the lowest amount of overtaking in the 2010 calendar, FIA president Jean Todt called for immediate changes to the track.

The changes for the Abu Dhabi layout will not be made just yet, but in the weeks preceding the 2011 round of the Formula 1 calendar, and have been discussed in a recent meeting at Sepang between Cregan and F1 officials.

We spoke with Charlie Whiting and he spoke with the drivers and they actually had very few issues with the circuit,” said the Abu Dhabi circuit official after the meeting, hinting that it wasn't the track that the F1 drivers had something against, but the layout that was highly prohibitive in terms of overtaking.

Abu Dhabi will not be the only circuit in the closing stages of the 2011 calendar to feature track changes, as Brazil's Interlagos track will also be revised ahead of this year's grand prix. However, the Brazilian track's layout will not be altered, but the grandstands on the outside of the Curva du Cafe corner will be demolished and replaced with a run-off area.

That modification was made based on safety issues, following the recent death of Brazilian stock car racer Gustavo Sondermann.
