When it comes to protesting, there are more ways of going about it, but few are as classy, funny, and typically British as this one.
Residents in Shefford, UK, decided to throw an abandoned Volkswagen Golf the birthday party it probably never had back when it was still in use. The five-door hatchback has been abandoned on George Street for a little over a year and, despite several complaints filed with the council and the mayor, no one seems too eager to move it.

So, as a form of protest, neighbors got together, presumably pinched a few pennies, and threw the Golf a birthday party on its one-year anniversary, SWNS reports (story via Fox Auto). This included homemade decorations and the usual supermarket-bought party decorations, drawings, and what looks like a list with the complaints filed with the council for the car’s removal.

One resident tells the media outlet that this was as much a form of venting frustrations (and having some fun) as it was an attempt to draw attention to the problem. George Street is a one-way street, and the abandoned Golf is the only one facing the wrong way. To make matters worse, it’s blocking a neighbor’s driveway, and it sits near a school drop-off point.

“Somebody has got to draw some attention to it somehow,” says the resident, under the cover of anonymity. “It's been reported to the DVLA at least three times. Its MOT certificate ran out on March 25, 2020, and it hasn't been taxed since May 31, so you'd think they'd want to know. But they haven't done anything about it. The police don't want to know either.”

Apparently, the council refused to remove the car because they thought it looked too good to actually be abandoned. This, despite the fact that it’s slowly filling with litter, like discarded junk food containers, shampoo bottles, and old shoes.

“We just thought, we have to do something to draw attention to this. People have seemed to enjoy the decorations – people passing by on the pavement do stop and look at it,” says the resident.

So far, no word on whether the birthday party was successful where the formal complaints failed, but one assumes that, at the very least, a fun time was had by all. And tea.
