AAA Says Top Tier Gasoline Is Better For Your Car, Not Just Marketing

The American Automobile Association has published a study on fuel quality that has revealed the effectiveness of top-tier gasoline.
The goal of this analysis was to discover if the pricey variety of gas in most service stations was as good for engines as advertised. More importantly, they sought to find if there was a clear difference between the standard gasoline and the one with additives.

The latter type, known as top tier, is more expensive than the former, and comes with special additives, including detergents, which provide cleansing for the engine’s valves. The type of gas was introduced after an EPA mandate that specified the minimum level of gasoline detergent, which was described as insufficient by some automakers.

According to the AAA, after they simulated 4,000 miles of driving, the regular kind of gas generated 19 times more carbon deposits in engines. This type of deposit affects both pistons and valves, and is bad for performance, fuel economy, and emissions. In layman’s terms, the more expensive gasoline in the USA is better for your engine.

The AAA wanted to draw an alarm with this study, as they discovered that only 12% of customers were interested in quality when choosing a gas station. Others just wanted to find the nearest service station available, while some drivers were looking for the best price they could find.

The AAA suggests that drivers should “reconsider their priorities” when selecting a gas station, and switch to the more expensive variety if they can. According to the same study, the difference between top-tier and regular gasoline is of three cents/gallon on average, so it would not be a financial disaster to get the expensive kind.

We believe you should stick to a chain of gas stations in which you trust (whatever works for you), and try to time your refills so that you do not have to fill up somewhere else. Here are a few pointers on how to save money on your gas bills.
