German carmaker Audi AG reported July sales figures earlier today. Spurred once again by increased demand for the A3 compact, the brand delivered nearly 10% more units than in the same month a year ago.

The approximately 144,000 car Audi sold in July add up to an 11% increase to 1.013 million for the first seven months of 2014. This is the first time the automaker has managed to exceed one million within the allotted time.

As we mentioned, the A3 range was a major source of growth, with 52% more examples being delivered in July compared to a year ago. Audi said the A6 mid-size luxury model also played a significant role, demand growing by 14% over the last year to 26,500.

Audi sales in the United States grew 12% in July and 13.3% for the year to date. The A3 sedan was launched there in April and is being joined by a TDI (diesel) engined version and the S3 performance sedan right now. In addition, the A3 Cabriolet and the Q3 compact SUV will go on sale for the first time on the US market at the end of August and are expected to do quite well.

The Asia-Pacific region represented another source of growth, with demand in South Korea exceeding that in 2013 by a massive 65.8%. 15.6% more Audis were delivered in China last month, thanks to the Q3 and the long-wheelbase version of the A6.

Speaking during a press conference, Sales chief Luca de Meo said Audi is are in a great position to achieve well over 1.6 million deliveries this year. “We successfully managed to continue our global growth strategy in July and for the first time in Audi history exceeded the million mark for cars sold after just seven months,” the official added.
