A 1958 Aston Martin DB 2/4 Mk III, owned by the same family for nearly six decades, will be auctioned as part of Silverstone Auctions’ classic car sale at Race Retro on February 27 and 28.
The DB 2/4 Mk III was built by Aston Martin from 1957 through 1959, and it was an evolution of the DB 2/4 Mk II, from which it borrowed the W.O Bentley-designed, Lagonda 2.9-liter, straight-six engine, pushing 162 horsepower. Thanks to an optional dual-exhaust system, those numbers were raised to a reputed 178 horsepower. The car reaches 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 9.3 seconds and has a top speed of 120 mph (193 km/h).
The new model came with a redesigned grille similar to the company’s racing DB3S, a new instrument panel, an optional Laycock-de Normanville overdrive, worm-and-sector steering, a live rear axle and, for the first time on an Aston, disc brakes and a hydraulically operated clutch.
The chassis number AM300/3/1433 was first owned by W. Griffith, who kept the car until 1960 when he placed an advert in the local newspaper. Marcus Green, a member of the Aston Martin Owner’s Club, saw the advert and bought the car, which remained in his possession until now.
In 2003, Green’s son-in-law inherited the car and completely restored it, an operation that took place over two years. He also rebuilt the engine and had the interior trimmed to a high specification.
The 1958 Aston Martin DB 2/4 Mk III has only 67,000 miles (108,000 km) on the odometer, comes with original bills and receipts dating back to the 1960s, a tool kit, many other original components, and is expected to fetch somewhere between £160,000 ($229,328) and £180,000 ($257,994).
“This car has been a significant part of family history for over 50 years. It is now time for this Aston Martin to find a new keeper who will hopefully preserve it for many future generations to come, ” Will Smith, Silverstone Auctions sales manager, stated.
