This is both extremely stupid and very smart. One man from Wales got caught transporting a run-down Skoda on the roof of his perfectly-functional Volkswagen, and was fined in court this week.
The incident actually took place in March this year, as Glyndwr Wyn Richards, the man in question, was loading the two cars onto a ramp at a scrap yard. Because he was just given his sentence in court this year and the case was closed, the video was made public to the media – and went viral shortly afterwards, for reasons you will understand as soon as you check it out. It’s also available at the bottom of the page.
This happened in the resort town of Aberystwyth in Ceredigion, Wales, the BBC reports. Richards is the guy at the wheel of the Volkswagen Passat, with the Skoda Octavia strapped somewhat precariously on top of it. The publication says he drove this way throughout town, making his way to the scrap yard, where he dropped the Skoda.
“Glyndwr Wyn Richards, from Llanfarian in Ceredigion, was convicted of using a motor vehicle in a condition likely to cause injury at Aberystwyth Magistrates' Court on Wednesday,” the BBC says. “Richards, 51, was seen driving the car through Aberystwyth to a scrap yard on the Glan yr Afon Industrial Estate in March.”
“He was fined £80 and told to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £85 after pleading guilty to the offense,” adds the same media outlet. He was also given 3 points off his license for the same charge.
Richards got absolutely zero points for creativity, as you can imagine. While his stunt was hilarious and pretty smart, it was also reckless. Traveling with extra-large loads strapped to vehicles that are not meant to be carrying those loads in the first place poses a risk to the driver and other motorists. Sure, it’s cheaper than hiring a tow truck, but if something goes wrong, the last thing of your mind will be the few quids you saved.
