It was way before the World War II begun that BMW started making cars. After an endeavor into building motorcycles, airplane engines and even pots and cans, the BMW Management decided it was time to start building their own cars.
Until the first BMW car rolled out of the factory, the Germans used to build Dixi cars, under license from Austin. That proved to be valuable experience that they used in developing their own vehicles.

However, from day one, a roadster was always considered over at Munich. The first car with a 6-cylinder engine they ever built, the 303, was the inspiration for what came next, the first roadsters: 315/1 and 319/1.

From then on the roadster was a part of BMW until 2013. After these models were retired, they were replaced by the 328, the 507 later on and going over to more recent years, the Z8 and Z4.

The guys from XCAR put together a great 20 minute video, talking about these amazing cars and what they meant during their own time. It is a bit long but we do recommend you watch it.
