Despite the somewhat alarming title, the news is actually good, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau of the US. The good part is that the motorcycle thefts went down 6% in 2011 compared to 2010.
All in all, no less than 49,791 bikes were stolen in 2010, and only 46,667 in 2011, despite a slight increase in motorcycle sales during the latter year. The top 5 brands preferred by bike thieves have been Honda, followed by Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson, and these 5 account for more than three quarters of all stolen vehicles.
Top three bike-theft states are California, Texas and Florida. The same source mentions that July and August were the most prolific months for the bike theft activity, while December and February, the least “profitable”.
Now, most people protect their property with alarms and even more efficiently - GPS locator beacons, which can track a bike's whereabouts immediately after the rider notices it has changed ownership without consent, so it is to be expected a continuous decrease of motorcycle thefts during the next years.
