With the base Carrera and Carrera S, as well as their "4" (AWD) and Cabriolet versions of the 992 Porsche 911 now in showrooms, we can look forward to the upcoming specials. We've already talked about the 992 Turbo, which should make its debut this fall, so the time has come to discuss the new GT3.
Not only is the 992 GT3 set to retain the naturally aspirated motor and optional manual transmission (more on this below), but it also looks like the Touring Package is here to stay.
While the Neunelfer lineup packs north of twenty models at full maturity, Zuffenhausen has a habit of shuffling various derivatives from one generation to another, which is how the GT2 was axed for the 991 generation.
However, the said path also led to the introduction of the Touring for the 991.2. Still, with Porsche introducing the TP to keep the 991 R speculaton market under control (prices had gone past the $500,000 point, heading towards $1M), one didn't know what to expect for the 992.
Well, it looks like the 992 GT3 Touring Package is coming. For instance, the prototype we have here, which has been spied doing its thing on the Nurburgring, sports the center exhaust setup, which is a trademark of the GT3. Nevertheless, the machine comes with the active wing of the Carrera, which can be fully retracted (the Gurney flap placed on top of the Carrera wing of the 991 GT3 TP is missing, but this could easily be added later on).
Then there's the soundtrack. Sure, these pictures won't please your ears no matter how high you set the volume, but similar prototypes have been caught on camera before, with these clearly showcasing the atmospheric engine sound.
Returning to the tech side, Porsche developed an all-new N/A 4.0-liter flat-six for the 718 GT4 and Spyder, with the unit based on the TT 3.0-liter flat-six of the Carrera (S). While the unit delivers 420 ponies on the mid-engined specials, we should see an evolution being used for the 992 GT3, with this expected to pack more than 500 horses.
The 991 GT3 Touring only came in manual form, so this setup might be maintained.
