We’re about to write the conclusion to the Porsche 911 GT3 fire risk chapter. A leaked letter sent by Porsche and later confirmed as being authentic tells us that the German automaker has found a credible fix to the potentially deadly problem and is also making amends with hundreds of people who have bought GT3s and weren’t able to drive them.
On April 22nd, production of modified 911 GT3 engines will begin. The existing 785 owners will get a full engine swap to a block that’s stronger. And since Porsche has issued a stop-sale on the GT3, no other cars have been built with this issue.
The repairs on all examples should be ready in time for some summer fun, and as compensation the customers will receive another full year of free warranty. We’d through in a free track day, just so man and machine can get reacquainted with each other, but hey that’s just us. We'd really like to know if GT3 owners consider this sufficient compensation, especially since the resale value of their cars might have been unjustly affected.
In a recent interview McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt was adamant in his defense of the German rivals. He said McLaren has actually bought a GT3 (and yes, theirs has been recalled too), the company boss having only words of praise. A cheaper sportscar withe good track performance, codenamed P13, is being developed using the 911 model as a benchmark of sorts.
