Perhaps worse than seeing a rare or otherwise outstanding car not getting the love it needs is hearing that it was destroyed on purpose. Multiply that by 80 to get a good appreciation of the ugliness of this story.
Two outbuildings in rural England – in Over Peover, Cheshire – burned to a crisp late on December 14, the Cheshire Fire Rescue confirms. Six engines were called at the scene and the fire was put out late into the night, after which firefighters continued damping down the area to ensure there was no risk of fire left.

The outbuildings were converted barns, and they housed some 80 vehicles, all of which burned to a crisp. The two photos released by the authorities show the kind of damage done. The fire department doesn’t go into the details of the collection housed there, but British tabloid the Daily Mail says that it was packed with exotics and supercars, including rare Ferraris and Porsches.

Moreover, says the same publication, one of them was a mystery £3 million ($4.05 million) vehicle that had “been stored in the outbuildings as part of a finance scheme.” It, too, was completely destroyed.

As of the time of press, no other details are available about the impressive collection that went out in a puff of smoke. Authorities believe the fire was arson, and are pursuing the investigation from this angle.

“At 10.17pm on 14 December police were called to a large fire at two outbuildings in Chelford Lane, Over Peover,” a Cheshire Police spokesperson says in a statement. “Firefighters were in attendance fighting the fire, police assisted with road closures. A joint investigation by firefighters and police is continuing into the cause of the fire which is believed to have been started deliberately.”

Assuming the price tag on that mystery vehicle is even remotely close to reality and given the number of vehicles in the converted barn, this was no amateur buying stuff off Craigslist, but a dedicated collector. Details about this are bound to come out in the following days.
