700 HP Brabus 6x6, Classified as Commercial Truck in China, Is Banned in Shanghai

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 is an incredible monster by any chart you want to use. As a matter of fact, there are few cars in the world that are as big and can be driven without going through some peculiar driving schools.

Unfortunately, Chinese authorities included the gentle giant in the commercial pickup truck category and that brings about a couple of interesting changes. As a matter of fact, since the G63 AMG 6x6 is rated as a commercial vehicle, according to Chinese laws, it has to wear reflective tape on its outermost edges, to make sure it’s visible on the road. Like that could be a problem...

On top of that, just like any other truck, its access to downtown, crowded areas of big cities is restricted, including in Shanghai and Beijing. That brings about one of our curiosities regarding the Brabus 6x6 that showed up at the Shanghai Auto Show.

As you can see from our live photos, the car on the floor didn’t wear any kind of tape. On top of that, even if it were to wear some, its access would’ve been banned in Shanghai. Therefore, the German tuner must’ve brought it in on a platform.

And that would be shameful, to be honest, as the Brabus 6x6 700 Biturbo is a monster that few terrains can stand against. The 5.5-liter V8 with its two turbochargers was upgraded to make 700 HP and, with the added traction offered by the 6x6 transmission, there’s almost nothing that could make it sweat.

On perfect asphalt, the car will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph). At first, they might seem like poor numbers but you need to bare in mind that this car (truck or however you might want to call it) weighs 3.7 tons.

Sure, the Brabus treatment includes some carbon fiber bits here and there but even so, the weight is still well over 3.5 tons, and that requires some serious power to get moving. Now, if only it didn’t cost $1.6 million in China...
