$7 Million LaFerrari Becomes Most Expensive 21st Century Car Sold at Auction

Car auctions are battlegrounds for the rich and burgeoning. In 2016, for example, a 1955 Jaguar D-Type set a new record for the most expensive British car sold at auction ($21.78 million). If it’s American vehicles you’re interested in, 2016 saw RM Sotheby's set another record with a Shelby Cobra ($13.75 million). But have you ever wondered which is the most valuable modern vehicle ever sold at auction? Well, that comes in the form of LaFerrari #500.

The 500th (and final) coupe fetched a mind-boggling $7 million this weekend, during the RM Sotheby’s sale at an event dubbed Ferrari Finali Mondiali. To put that number into a different perspective, the LaFerrari coupe used to cost $1.4 million when the order books opened for the U.S. market. The open-top 2017 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta, meanwhile, is going for $2.1 million a pop.

It’s rather clear, then, that the Prancing Horse of Maranello stirs the soul as proficiently as it empties deep pockets. Then again, the one who spent $7 million on LaFerrari coupe #500 didn’t do it merely to quench his thirst for exclusivity. All proceeds from the sale will go toward the National Italian American Foundation. Specifically, to the Earthquake Relief Fund and its efforts to reconstruct Central Italy in the aftermath of two earthquakes.

Unlike any other LaFerrari coupe, the 500th unit prides itself on “a unique livery with a distinctly Italian theme: a red exterior with a white dream line on the hood and rear windshield.” There’s also a small Italian flag painted on the hood, located next to the Cavallino Rampante badge. The latter detail serves as a gentle reminder that this hypercar is a gift by Ferrari to its home country.

A commemorative plaque celebrating the 70th anniversary of the automaker rounds off the LaFerrari. Under the carbon fiber body, there’s not much between this and any other LaF coupe: 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine, KERS-enhanced hybrid system, and 950 rampaging horsepower.
