When FoMoCo crashed the party of the 2017 Acura NSX at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the Blue Oval showed that pedigree and secrecy beats relentless teasing and promises. More than a year since that magnificent moment, Ford received 6,506 fully completed applications from men and women who wish to own the 600-plus horsepower supercar.
All those applications were submitted in a one-month window, a testament to the fact that Ford knows how to spur interest and ignite passion for all things fast. Speaking of fast, the new GT promises to be a stupidly fast machine thanks to the low curb weight of the carbon fiber construction and the EcoBoost V6 mill.
“We’re excited by the amount of enthusiasm fans are showing for the new Ford GT,” declared Dave Pericak, the global head honcho of Ford Performance. “This initial application window is just one of many ways fans and potential owners will have to connect with our all-new supercar even before it hits the streets.”
Of the 6,506 potential owners, the Blue Oval will notify the lucky ones in the next three months. The bigger picture, however, tells us that there’s a huge problem with the number of applications. More to the point, production of the 2017 Ford GT is capped at 250 units a year, U.S. included. Suppose Ford will build 6,506 units at a rate of 250 units a year. To finish the lot, FoMoCo would need no less than 26 years!
Even though the initial application window is closed, fans of the breed can build and share the 2017 Ford GT by accessing the online configurator. Fun fact: the majority of the 481,000 American citizens who configured the GT in the one-month span like the Frozen White paint more than any other finish. Liquid Blue comes in on second place. These said, first deliveries will be made by the end of the calendar year 2016.
