A 63-year-old woman was bludgeoned to death with a Bird electric scooter in a shocking and very violent attack in Long Beach, California, the Long Beach Police Department confirms for CBS Los Angeles.
The woman, identified as Rosa Manjarrez De Hernandez, was walking home after visiting a relative, when she was jumped by a black male. Police sources say that it’s unlikely that the two knew each other prior to the attack, but they’re yet to reveal a reason for it.

The incident was captured on the surveillance camera of a resident, and the footage helped the police track down the attacker some hours after De Hernandez’s death. He was arrested at a nearby shop as he was picking up smokes and is facing a murder charge at the end of the ongoing investigation. His identity has not been revealed to the public, but he went away in handcuffs without further incident.

CBS Los Angeles reports that he initially charged on De Hernandez with his bare hands, knocking her to the ground and stomping on her. When a passer-by tried to intervene on her behalf, the suspect picked up the Bird electric scooter, which was nearby, and used it as a weapon. He then fled on foot.

Police initially responded to a call of an incident involving a deadly weapon. When they arrived at the scene, they found De Hernandez with significant injuries to her upper torso and she was pronounced dead right away. Another neighbor tells the publication that one cop described the sight as “the worst he’d ever seen.”

In a statement, Bird confirms it was one of their e-scooters that was used in the attack, adding, “We are deeply saddened by this act of violence and our hearts and thoughts go out to the victim and her family. We will work with local law enforcement to help with the investigation into this tragedy.”
