We are days away from one of the most action-packed motorsport weekends of the year. Forget stock cars that aren't stock and all the big-budget Formula Drift events, Global Rallycross is where it's at. Volkswagen's teams are about to switch over from little Polos to classic Beetles and we have just the video to get you excited.
First of all, let's clarify what you're about to watch: drifting, donuts and high speed cornering. Last time we checked, the front-wheel drive Beetle wasn't capable of any of those. That's because motorsport boffins added a powerful WRC-spec engine with added boost and a racing all-wheel drive system.
This weekend, team Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross will star in a two-race event at the Port of Los Angeles. Tanner Foust will drive car number #34 livered in Rockstar Energy colors, while car #77 will be Scott Speed's 7Up Beetle.
The GRC VW Beetle is equipped with 540+ horsepower and goes 0-60 mph in only 2 seconds. As you can see from the photos below, the suspension has also been re-engineered to help it cope with the lumps and bumps associated with a rallycross track.
"It's been a roller coaster season so far, but I am still very happy with the results, especially the win in New York, considering this is a new team and a new car,” said Foust. “Continuing the learning process, I will be piloting an even newer car with Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross in Los Angeles. I am very excited to compete with the new Rockstar Energy Drink Volkswagen Beetle at the Port of LA.”
Editor's note: The Beetle GRC has a 1.6 TSI and a all wheel drive. No Beetle has either of those. Shhhh, don't tell anybody!
