The 50th anniversary Shelby Cobra, which made its debut at the recent Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale has sold out in just 48 hours after the official introduction. According to Shelby America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International, all of the 50 cars were purchased by consumers and Shelby dealers.
“The strong demand for these cars proves that the Shelby Cobra is still as desirable and sought after today as it was 50 years ago. People who didn’t have the opportunity to buy one in the 1960s jumped at the chance to own one of these very special collector’s edition Shelbys. Although the entire factory allocation has been spoken for, a few of these anniversary cars are still available from our Shelby Cobra dealers who seized the opportunity and bought multiple cars,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American.
All special edition models offer a stronger frame, the leaf sprung suspension that was originally fitted to the first small block cars, disc brakes fitted as standard, wire wheels and Wilton Carpeting. They are painted in Shelby Black and sport wine leather interiors.
Customers paid a $69,995 for the models that came with fiberglass bodies, or as much as $134,995 for those with aluminum ones. However this doesn’t include an engine or transmission. Given the legendary status of the Cobra and its association with Caroll Shelby, it comes as no surprise to see this did not put buyers off. It will be interesting to see how much the dealers will ask for the anniversary Cobras when they re-sell them.
