Three years ago, Bill Caswell, an automotive enthusiast, decided to drop his job for a couple of days and enter the Mexican stage of the WRC Championship in a cheap car. The problem was, of course, what car to choose.
After surfing the web for a while, the best alternative he had was a $500 BMW E30 318is from 1991. An old car but still capable of running in a WRC event with minor modifications.

As you can imagine, the other participants, with cars of over $100,000 and even up to $500,000 frowned upon the newcomer with its old car and probable sluggish performance.

Even though initially Bill though the car would concede after one or two races, the vehicle survived and it's now entering the third year in a row in the Mexican Rally competition.

Not only that but the same car was later transformed into a buggy to run in the Baja 1000 race and afterwards it was turned into a climb car to race in the Pike's Peak competition, proving that the E30 3er is worthy of legendary status.

For those of you that have enough time at their disposal, the guys from drive put together a video about the daring endeavor that's 42 minutes long. It's worth a look and you'll find it below.
