477 HEMI-Powered 1970 Plymouth Superbird Looks Gorgeous, It’s Actually a Replica

Like the Charger Daytona from Dodge, the winged warrior known as the Plymouth Superbird embodies Mopar muscle at its finest. This particular car, however, is not a Superbird but an accurate tribute of the original. Be it a replica or a clone – whatever you want to call it – the visuals are perfect while the engine bay hides one of the most desirable V8s of that bygone era.

426 HEMI is how it’s called, rebuilt by Jim Shewbert & Adams Machine of Palmdale, California into a 477-cu.in. motor with forged pistons. The 7.8-liter blunderbuss runs Eagle connecting rods, a Mopar Performance camshaft, Keith Black aluminum cylinder heads, dual four-barrel 850-cfm Holley carburetors, an MSD distributor, and an eight-quart oil pan.

The engine bay comes full circle with the purple horn that features the unmistakable character created by Chuck Jones for the Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoon series. Suck-squeeze-bang-blow is channeled to the Dana 60 rear axle with 3.55:1 gearing and a Sure Grip limited-slip differential by a four-speed manual. The exhaust, meanwhile, combines an X-pipe with Street HEMI mufflers for that deep big-block growl we all can’t get enough of.

Look closely at the fender tag, and you’ll notice that a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner in Sunfire Yellow served as the basis for this build. The donor vehicle was delivered with a 383 and a four-speed box. Listed on Bring a Trailer at $60,000 with five days of auctioning to go, the car also boasts an adjustable rear wing and front fender vents, hood pins, and a vinyl roof.

Featured in the January 2019 issue of Mopar Muscle with a claimed output of more than 700 horsepower (710 PS), the 1970 Plymouth Superbird is finished in Tor-Red over black seats and white piping. The pop-up headlights are housed in a steel nose fitted “under previous ownership” according to the listing. Riding on Chrysler suspension components, the car further rocks 15- by 6.5-inch Rallye wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A rubber shoes.

Considering that an original 1970 Plymouth Superbird is valued at $300,000 or more, the current bid on this replica is more than justified.
