According to Cars.com, models like the much-hyped Ford Fiesta are struggling to match their older, stale counterparts. Ford only managed to move 3,473 Fiesta supercompacts, falling behind to number 4 in sales in the segment, below the Nissan Versa with 6,724 sales in November, the Honda Fit with 4,180 units and Hyundai’s Accent at 4,052. The figures are even more alarming when you consider that the soon-to-be-replaced Chevrolet Aveo managed 3,262 sales, just a few hundreds under the Fiesta.
The news gets a little better for the new Chevrolet Cruze, as GM sold 8,066 units in November, almost 3000 more than the Cobalt it replaces managed last year. Sales of the VW Jetta jumped 50 percent to a total of 8,955 cars, while the aging Focus also did well, with 27 percent more leaving dealerships in that month, thanks in part to an aggressive incentive program.
It’s becoming clear that customers want more space in their compacts, as subcompacts are reaching the size of what was previously C-body models, while compact SUVs and midsize sales remain steady. Perhaps Ford needs to rethink its marketing strategy for the little Fiesta.
