A slumber party in Indiana ended tragically on Saturday, when the kids stepped out of the house to offer much needed attention to a stranded driver.
Eight teens came out of the house to push a woman’s SUV in the hopes of getting it started again when they were hit by an incoming car, WDRB reports. Four of the kids died: 3 were killed on the spot and a fourth one died later at the hospital.
The crash happened in Cortland, located about 60 miles north of Louisville, at 11 at night. The woman in the SUV was the mother of the girl in whose honor the slumber party was held, and her car broke down a block away from the house. She called to say she couldn’t make it, and the kids came out to help her get the car back home.
All children pushing the car were injured, including the female driver and another minor passenger. Their condition remains unknown, the publication says, citing the police report. No word yet on whether the other driver was also hurt.
For the time being, police have refused to offer more details into the accident, as the investigation is underway. They are, however, asking eyewitnesses to come forward, in the hope of collecting more information on the crash and determine who was responsible for it.
“Police say 24-year-old Elizabeth Watson was driving the SUV that hit the teens. No charges are pending at this time,” WDRB notes.
All the victims have been identified, including the fatalities. The kids were aged 12 to 16, and public vigils have been held both at the local high school and the area of the crash. Several parents of the victims have spoken out, urging parents to “hug yours kids a little tighter tonight,” because tragedies like this can happen.
