He is no longer leading the championship and victories are still expected from him, but Valentino Rossi’s fans have never grown weaker. In fact, with all the recent technologies and computer graphics widely available today, it looks like the 46 Tifosi are growing even more devoted. It will most likely be one of his AGV helmets which receives an anniversary livery, instead of his bike, but we can expect his fans to have something really cool prepared for him, maybe one more huge banner like the 100th victory one they had in Assen in 2009.
Yesterday we ran a small story on the milestone the legendary Valentino Rossi will reach this weekend in his native Italy: he’s about to participate in his 300th GP race of the career, determined to put an end to the 5-win series of the defending world champion Marc Marquez. While he is not the only one looking forward to gun down the young Spaniard, Rossi looks like the one rider who could actually beat the Repsol Honda pilot at Mugello.
It will be a milestone-race for Marquez, as well, as he will mark 100 GP races this weekend. Having become the youngest MotoGP champion ever straight from his rookie year in the premier class, Marquez took the world by storm, and with it, Lorenzo’s crown. While the Mallorcan is definitely looking for payback, it seems like he’s not that happy with his bike and tires, this year, and his chances to make a credible claim of the championship are steadily drifting towards the mathematical side of MotoGP.
On the other hand, Marquez’ team mate Dani Pedrosa is also eyeing a victory in Mugello, but he will need more than his amazing characteristic determination if he wants to get the better of Marquez this weekend. Both Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez are heading for Mugello in full confidence, but the 9-time world champion knows he has almost nothing to lose.
In fact, he is indulging in the lighter side of training, organizing friendly races at his Motoranch in native Tavullia. He recently had one of his Moto3 team riders Francesco Bagnaia, Moto3 Gresini’s Niccolo Antonelli, Moto2 NGM Forward Racing’s Mattia Pasini, his riding brother Luca Marini and others on the Tavullia track, most likely to “zen up” his mind ahead of what the media already calls the “Battle of Mugello”.
