300 HP Volkswagen Golf R Variant (Wagon) Revealed ahead of Los Angeles Auto Show

After many months of testing at the Nurburgring, Volkswagen is now ready to reveal the fastest Golf estate ever. It's called the Golf R Variant and comes with everything a normal Golf R does, only it has a really large trunk as well.

Ahead of the model's debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later today, Volkswagen has issued a full press release about the car. The weird thing is that nothing they say makes sense to an American buyer.

The EU-spec Golf R Variant comes with the same impressive 2.0 TSI turbo as the Golf R and Audi S3. It's good for 300 PS and 380 Nm of torque, sent to all four wheels via a standard six-speed DSG gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel drive. Acceleration is, in theory at least, as good as a sportscar's. The sprint from 0 to 80 km/h takes 3.8 seconds, while reaching 100 km/h requires only 5.1 seconds.


That's only a little bit slower than a Golf R hatch, but the advantage is that because of the estate body, trunk space has grown from 380 liters to 605 liters with the rear seats up. Fuel consumption isn't too bad either at 7 l/100km combined, but we doubt anybody can have fun and get close to that number.

In place of the standard suspension, you will be able to order DCC adaptive chassis control system with driving profile selector that features a Race mode. There should also be a myriad of other options, including larger 20-inch wheels or a panoramic sunroof, which we won't know about until the launch next year.

The US-spec model should arrive as a 2016 model year boasting 292 hp, according to the local power rating. It should also be called the "Golf R SportWagen", since that's the name VW of America chose for their model. Sales in Europe are scheduled to begin next spring, with first deliveries in the summer.

Editor's note: With the way sales in America are going (that's badly, for the record), you'd think that Volkswagen would wait until the next Worthersee to show this car. But noooooo….
