3-Wheel In-Line Motorcycle Gets Closer to Mass Production

The 3-wheel in-line motorcycle idea and prototype have been around for some time now, but this year we get to see a better machine altogether, a worthy demo unit to be considered by the big manufacturers.

Dubbed 3x2x2, John Parsons' (Dynamic Design Studios) invention proposes a completely different approach to bikes for rough terrain. Not only the third wheel is positioned in line with the other two, but it also provides traction and steering.

The advantages of rear-wheel steering are obvious, as the bike corners faster and safer, making the front wheel less prone to slipping on difficult surfaces with poor grip. Adding a second wheel drive and independent suspensions means double the grip and easier passage over obstacles, while retaining the increased grip and braking power.

Designed as an off-road bike, John Parsons' 3x2x2 principle is however, easy to adapt fore pretty much any other motorcycle out there.

“The bike would be relatively straightforward to manufacture. The engine is standard and most of the parts are already designed for mass production. Those that aren’t could be redesigned for production without too much effort. There hasn’t been any interest from mainstream manufacturers, which is not surprising as they have their own future products based on what they know they can sell, sales potential of 3x2x2 bikes is an unknown. The mainstream manufactures would become interested if there was enough public interest." Parsons told Faster and Faster.

Now, we'd really like to see a sport bike in a 3x2x2 attire. How could tell, maybe that's what the big manufacturers are waiting for...
