Subaru has officially announced plans to build a 3-row crossover model at its SIA plant in Lafayette, Indiana. Production will kick off in 2018, when we will finally have a replacement for the Tribeca.
The yet unnamed crossover will be longer than the Tribeca while offering a full third row.

"The new vehicle has not yet been named, but will likely carry a name synonymous with outdoor adventure, consistent with the company’s other successful crossovers; Outback, Forester and Crosstrek,"
Subaru says.

When the crossover arrives, it will be the fourth model made by Subaru in the United States, after the Legacy, Outback, and a new Impreza compact sedan and 5-door model beginning production in late 2016.

Thomas Doll, President and COO of Subaru of America has said the company is now in its 7th year of record sales and a US-built Impreza followed by the 7-seater should keep things going. However, a cap will be placed on production to conserve build quality.

2018 is also the year when the company's first plug-in hybrid will debut. We expect it to be based on either the Impreza or more likely the Legacy. Currently, the company has two hybrids (Impreza and XV Crosstrek), though they are mild when compared even to the normal Prius. It will probably not be sold in Japan, and the green technology comes from a collaboration with Toyota. Just so you know.

Speaking of which, the two firms have just agreed to make a successor for the Toyobaru triplets. It's not yet been decided when the next Toyota GT 86, Scion FR-S or Subaru BRZ will debut, but 2019 sounds like a good time.

The Tribeca went out of production in 2013, and though it wasn't very popular, it still left Subaru's crossover family wide open at the top. Volkswagen has also recently announced it will assemble a 3-row crossover in North America starting in 2016. So from Japan to Germany, everybody wants their 7-seater to appeal to the American consumers.
